The Saturday Morning Review

I get the privilege today to introduce to you Economics for Everybody: Applying Biblical Principles to Work, Wealth, and the World.

(Just so you know, I was given the set of Economics for Everybody for the purpose of reviewing it. No other compensation was received and the opinions given are my own. You can read my complete Disclosure Policy if you so desire.)

This homeschool economics curriculum is done by Compass Classroom. It is a 12-lesson DVD set with an accompanying study guide for students. (Also available on the Compass Classroom website is a complete scope-and-sequence and answer guide for the teacher.) The set is $70.00 on the Compass Classroom website.

Economics for Everybody is designed to be a one-semester economics credit for high school students. It can be used as a stand-alone curriculum or as a supplement for those desiring a more intense study. There are complete instructions for how to use the curriculum for either.

From the website:

Everybody talks about it. The news is full of it. But most Christians know very little about it. Economics: it’s everywhere, influencing everything, and so rarely understood.

Economics for Everybody seeks to remedy that through an insightful and entertaining exploration of the principles, practices, and consequences of economics. Thoroughly unconventional, it links entrepreneurship with lemonade, cartoons with markets, and Charlie Chaplin with supply and demand. It’s funny, clever, profound, and instructive all in one place. It’s Economics for Everybody.

My Thoughts

Truthfully, we won’t be using this curriculum until next year, simply because we’re finishing up American History right now. Economics and Government are slated for junior year.

However, I have watched a couple of the videos and read through the study guide, as well as looked through the scope-and-sequence. I really like what this curriculum offers! The Biblical and historical contexts and constructs are so very valuable. Just look at the lesson titles:

  1. And God Created Economics | Stewardship in God’s Image
  2. The Economic Problem of Sin | Law, Liberty & Government
  3. The Path from Work to Wealth | Production, Property & Tools
  4. The Route From Scarcity to Plenty | Money, Markets & Trade
  5. The Role of the Entrepreneur | Capital, Calculation & Profit
  6. A Tale of Two Theologies, Part 1 | From God to Politics
  7. A Tale of Two Theologies, Part 2 | Economic Philosophies & Systems
  8. Government Intervention | Basic Principles & Education
  9. The Two Mysteries of Monetary Policy | Inflation & Depressions
  10. The Welfare & Corporate States of America | The Costs of Redistribution
  11. Economics Has Consequences | The Real Effects of Sin
  12. Kingdom Economics

I believe any student taking this course will come away with a solid foundation in Biblical economic and stewardship principles. The video lessons themselves are interesting and easy to understand, and I’m confident they’ll keep my teenager’s attention.

Be sure to check out the other curriculum offered by Compass Classroom as well!
